If you love Africa, visiting the gorgeous island of Mauritius is a must. It offers so many natural wonders, like beautiful waterfalls, the Seven Colored Earth Geopark, and incredible botanical gardens. Ten Interesting Facts about Mauritius
In Mauritius, there are many hotels and rental properties to choose from. Selecting the perfect one for you is not an easy task. If you are looking a great family resort, you can consider La Pirogue Mauritius. We stayed at La Pirogue Mauritius in January 2026 and found this property excellent for a family vacation. We saw many families with both small children and teenagers staying at the resort. There were also quite a few couples looking for a romantic atmosphere.
Location of La Pirogue Mauritius
La Pirogue Mauritius is a beautiful resort hotel located in the western part of Mauritius, right next to the Flic en Flac village. This is a great place to stay for everyone who enjoys the beach and nature.

It takes only 10-15 minutes to walk to Flic en Flac from La Pirogue. In Flic-en-Flac you will find a good choice or souvenir shops, restaurants, supermarkets etc. All you need to do is walk out of the hotel and turn left. The sidewalk is not the greatest and you will need to watch cars passing by you, but it’s not a huge deal. You’ll get to Flic en Flac very quickly. Prices there are much lower than at the hotel. Some of the things you might want to buy are water bottles, some snacks, sunscreen, kids’ toys and other small stuff.

Hotel grounds
What I like about La Pirogue hotel is that its design is rather simple and easy to navigate. You have the reception, the main restaurant and the pool right in the middle. Then you have bungalows spread across the resort in both directions. There is easy access to the beach everywhere. On the far sides of the resort are various activities (sports center, tennis courts, gym, spa center).
The territory is very large and green. There are coconut palm trees and other trees everywhere which provide a lot of shade. It’s never too hot in their shade.

While staying at La Pirogue Mauritius, you will encounter many animals, insects and birds. We saw some large snails, small snakes (non venomous), butterflies, birds of different kinds, lizards, crabs on the beach, fish in the water etc. Flies are a bit of a nuisance, but I guess nothing can be done about them. We saw rather few mosquitoes, which is good. All in all, expect encounters with living creatures everywhere you go. This is Africa at its best.

Pool at La Pirogue Hotel
La Pirogue hotel has a large pool which is perfect for both adults and kids. The depth throughout the pool is only 1.2 meters which makes it safe to swim even for people who are not experienced swimmers. There is a shallow section where small kids can play.

The hotel offers daily aqua gym class at 11:00 am which is widely attended by patrons. It features nice music with some simple exercises which are fit for both adults and kids. We found the water in the pool of very comfortable temperature. Pool is generally not very crowded. Importantly, there are not too many lounge chairs, which I find a bit of a disadvantage. I recommend coming early if you want to get a good spot at the pool (right after breakfast).
Beach
La Pirogue Mauritius hotel has a private beach literally steps away from some bungalows. The white sandy beach is wide and beautiful. The water is turquoise blue and generally very clear. Not too many fish in the water, but occasionally you can see some. There are some umbrella and lounge chairs on the beach. It’s better to wear coral shoes because there are coral pieces all over the place and they can be sharp at times.

Sports center at La Pirogue Hotel
La Pirogue resort has a great sports center where you can do lots of different sports. You can play mini golf (9 holes), ping pong, badminton, basketball, volleyball- all free of charge. The gym has a wide selection of various exercise equipment. One caveat: no children under the age of 16 are allowed unfortunately.

Tennis
There is a tennis center with 5 tennis courts and 1 paddle tennis court. Playing is free if you bring your own equipment, otherwise you pay a small fee for rental. Courts need to be reserved if you want to play from 5 to 7 pm. Make sure to call at least a day in advance. During other times of the day there are few players and no reservation is required.

Golf
The hotel does not have a golf course nearby. However, it offers an opportunity to play golf at the Ile aux Cerfs golf club for free (but you have to get a taxi to go there, it’s not close). If you need to rent clubs and cart, you’d have to pay for those services.
Kids club
Since many guests staying at the hotel bring children, La Pirogue resort has a rather active kids club. They do various fun activities like mini golf, drawing, painting a boat, making a toy airplane, feeding fish etc. In the afternoon kids usually go to the pool with the teachers. My daughter enjoyed going to kids club for a couple of hours every day.
Dining at La Pirogue Hotel
La Pirogue hotel has one main restaurant (Wolmar) where they serve buffet breakfast and dinner. The selection at the buffet is very good and there are plenty of choices for international and local cuisine. At dinner they usually vary fish choices (e.g., sweet and sour fish, catch of the day, baked fish with dates). There are different types of desserts and a big hit is the ice cream cart with different choices of ice cream and sorbet (e.g., almond, chocolate, passion fruit, mango).

Lunch does not have a buffet option and you can eat at one of the smaller cafes at the resort, including Coconut Cafe (our favorite). There is an a la carte restaurant which you can visit for dinner (advance reservations required). You can also try bars and restaurants at Flic en Flac to get a good taste of local cuisine, there are quite a few good ones.
Rooms
La Pirogue resort has a large number of bungalows. Each bungalow consists of two rooms which house two families (so you won’t have a whole bungalow to yourself). Only those staying in suites will have a bungalow to themselves. Rooms have either one or two beds in the them. I found the size of rooms a bit small for families of three or more, but they are quite comfortable and nicely decorated inside. All rooms are air conditioned and there is also a large fan on the ceiling.
Other services
The hotel offers a lot of different services, so let me try to list some of those which I didn’t talk about yet.
For those people who are interested in diving, snorkeling, whale watching or swimming with dolphins, you can book these through the hotel and take a boat from the beach. There is also a spa at the hotel. Near the pool they have a cart selling fresh coconuts.

Also, keep in mind that La Pirogue has a sister hotel right next door (Sugar Beach) and you can also take advantage of their facilities if you’d like (although I can tell you, La Pirogue was more than enough for us!)
Drinking water
The hotel provides all guests reusable bottles. There is no drinking water in the rooms, however, there are water fountains in several places. You can refill your water bottles at these fountains. Water quality appears good and we did not have any issues. Another good place to refill your water bottle is tennis center. Some people do not like the idea of constantly refilling their water bottles and buy a case of water in the Flic-en-Flac supermarket. You’ll have to figure out what works best for you. In any case, I would not recommend drinking water from the sink in your room.

Guests with disabilities
Is La Pirogue hotel suitable for people with disabilities? Absolutely! One of our family members has a disability and we discovered that the hotel offers great support for these patrons. First, they provide accommodation closer to the main restaurant and pool so that these guests do not have to walk very far. Second, at dinner they have staff who help patrons to get food at the buffet and carry it to the table. There are nice paths throughout the hotel which are suitable for people using wheelchairs, walkers etc.
The final word
Overall, I found many advantages of staying at La Pirogue resort. Its location is excellent, beach and pool are exceptional, food is of great quality. This hotel is a particularly good fit for guests with disabilities and families with kids. I did not see any particular disadvantages, except that perhaps more umbrellas could be put by the pool. We should have explored Sugar Beach more, since it’s right next door, but we did not have time. Hopefully, next time we’ll explore more.
If you are looking for a similar setting to Mauritius, you can also consider the Zanzibar island. It has many beautiful hotels as well and a lot of great opportunities to enjoy the beauty of Africa. Check out my blog post:
